چکیده

In this paper, we show that within the set of stochastic three-periodlived OLG economies with productive assets (such as land), markets are necessarily sequentially incomplete, and agents in the model do not share risk optimally. We start by characterizing perfect risk sharing and …nd that it requires a state-dependent consumption claims which depend only on the exogenous shock realizations. We show then that the recursive competitive equilibrium of any overlapping generations economy with weakly more than three generations is not strongly stationary. This then allows us to show directly that there are shortrun Pareto improvements possible in terms of risk-sharing and hence, that the recursive competitive equilibrium is not Pareto optimal. We then show that a …nancial reform which eliminates the equity asset and replaces it with zero net supply insurance contracts (Arrow securities) will implement to Pareto optimal stochastic steady-state known to exist in the model. Finally, we also show via numerical simulations that a system of government taxes and transfers can lead to a Pareto improvement over the competitive equilibrium in the model. Inflationary Redistribution vs . Trading Opportunities : Cost of Inflation in a Monetary Model with Non - degenerate Distributions ∗

We propose a monetary model which features endogenous market incompleteness. Our framework combines the tractable features of competitive search with matching frictions of Menzio et al. (2013) with a costly participation model in a centralized market with complete insurance. Equilibrium market incompleteness arises because of: (i) an externality trading off matching opportunities with consumpti...

A Robust Approach to Hedging and Pricing in Imperfect Markets

This paper proposes a model-free approach to hedging and pricing in the presence of market imperfections such as market incompleteness and frictions. The generality of this framework allows us to conduct an in-depth theoretical analysis of hedging strategies with a wide family of risk measures and pricing rules, and study the conditions under which the hedging problem admits a solution and pric...

Pooling and endogenous market incompleteness

We study a financial market economy with a continuum of borrowers and pooling of borrowers’ promises. Under these conditions and in the absence of designing costs, utility-maximizing decisions of price-taking borrowersmay lead to financial market incompleteness. Parametrizing equilibria through the borrowers’ no-arbitrage beliefs, we link expectations to the financial market structure. Markets ...

The Employment (and Output) of Nations: Theory and Policy Implications

I study the interactions of product and labor market institutions in a model characterized by a three-states representation of the labor market. Firms bargain with unions over wages and employment levels. This generates unemployment. Households take the associated unemployment risk as given in making their participation decisions. Unemployment inserts a wedge between labor supply (participation...

A Search Phillips Curve A generalised search model to understand the way economic policies shape the transmission of shocks

A generalised search model with matching on product, labour and financial markets is presented in order to analyse the impact of market frictions on the pass-through of shocks. The model includes an endogenous demand for money that arises from matching frictions on the financial market. Moreover, price posting on retail markets allows to establish a forward-looking Search Phillips Curve. The mo...

Interaction of Labor and Credit Market Frictions: A Theoretical and Empirical Analysis

In this paper we investigate macroeconomic dynamics in the presence of frictions in both labor and credit markets. On the basis of the macroeconomic model in Merz (1995) with labor market frictions and capital accumulation, our paper offers an extension to frictions in credit markets which, analogously, are modeled as a search-and-matching process. Using the Merz model as limit case, we conside...
